Bunsen Burner

Parts of a Bunsen burner
Barrel:To raise the flame to a suitable height for burning
Collar:To regulate the amount of air entering the burner through the air-holes
Gas Tap:To control the flow of gas to the Bunsen burner
Air-holes:To allow air to enter the burner
Jet:To enable the gas to rush out of the gas supply and to draw in air
Base:To support burner so that it will not topple

Safety precautions to follow:
Before heating, wear safety goggles to protect your eyes.Ensure that the air-holes are fully closed.Make sure that it is positioned away from your friends and you.
During heating,do not touch the bunsen burner without protection,if heating a test tube, remember to use a test tube holder and do not point the mouth of the test tube towards you or your friends.
After heating, make a note to close the gas tap and return everything to its original state.
WITH THAT,YOU CAN HELP PREVENT ACCIDENTS FROM HAPPENING.:P

Luminous flame and its properties

  • Is orange in color
  • Flickering and unsteady
  • Clearly Visible
  • Occurs when the air-holes are closed
  • Hot
Zones of the luminous flame

  1. Thin outer zone:the hottest part of the flame, above the tip of the blue zone in this case, invisible to the naked eye
  2. Yellow zone:partial combustion, basically the black-body emission from hot particles of soot in the flame
  3. Dark zone:unburnt gas that is not yet combusted
  4. blue zone:complete combustion
Properties of Non-luminous flame

  1. Blue in colour
  2. Hotter than luminous flame(therefore,it is used to heat substances in a shorter stint)
  3. Steady
  4. Occurs when the air-holes are fully opened
Zones of non-luminous flame

Zone A:purple, hottest part of the flame just above the tip of the blue zone
Zone B:complete combustion,blue
Zone C:Dark, unburnt gas to be combusted

Strike back

meaning of strike back: The air-holes are fully opened before fire is lighted.  Too much air rushes into the air-hole and combustion occurs at the jet, thus producing a green flame and a loud noise will heard. Sometimes, fire may shoot out of the air-hole.

Steps to safely light up your bunsen burner.....:D........enjoy
Step 1: Close the air-hole
Step 2: Put a gas lighter above the barrel.
Step 3: Turn on the gas tap.
Step 4: Strike the lighter to ignite the gas.
Step 5: Open the air-holes until a non-luminous flame is obtained.

Reflections
From this,i have learnt a valuable lesson that we should not 'play with fire' as it is not a laughing matter when accidents happen and people got hurt.If we are mature enough not to meddle with the bunsen burner,it can be  pretty safe.During the practical lesson, everyone was excited on learning how to light a bunsen burner and some of us would messing around with fire, specifically referring to those who deliberately and mindlessly lighted a strike back out of mischief, luckily,no one was hurt during our practical lesson.Part of the reason was Ms Lim's strictness in handling such cases. At the end of the lesson,i was intrigued by the different colours of  the two flames,it was turly a rewarding experience!
